Algorithms vs Indexing By Professional Editors

John Barker @ the Intelligent Solutions Blog argues that algorithms used to categorize documents and map relationships between documents can not replace human editorial expertise, only aid human editors. As one of the people employed to, at least in part, manually categorize documents and map such relationships, you would think self-interest would cause me to eagerly agree but its not that simple. While I do agree with Barker’s general point (A doesn’t perfectly replace B), (1) I don’t really think it matters and (2) his criticism of Google Scholar is not the best example to illustrate the point.
